The Weirdo looked at the headlines, it was hard not to really. They were in large bold black type and he didn’t want to see that. He folded the paper and threw it away being careful to make sure no one would see it. He picked up the newspaper from Saturday and opened it. He skipped immediately to the comic section, folding any news away. He was quite interested to see what that crazy beagle was up to today. Was that nutty beagle driving the round-headed kid crazy? Would he be steeling the blanket from that blanket kid? There had been what was it, a year since the creator died? They were still running the comics though. They were still running them and that was a good thing. It was a good thing because other wise, how would he be able to tell what that zany beagle was up to? He looked at the television set that had been turned off, and then at the comic section.
He opened the can of cola he had brought with him from the refrigerator. He pulled on the tab and a release of gas poured out. He poured a portion of the can into a coffee mug that sat in front of him and drank from it while he looked for a comic about a beagle.
Max walked into the kitchen and opened a cupboard. He looked at the cereal choices through his bleary eyes and pulled out a box. He shuffled to the cupboards and pulled out a bowl, he then shuffled to the fridge and got the bottle of milk. He sat down at the table and looked at the three of them. He poured out a measure of cereal, and then a measure of milk. He was fitting the cap back on the milk when he looked around at the bowl.
“Crap.” He said and got up, walking to a drawer and extracting a spoon.
“Morning.” Kestrel said as she came into the kitchen.

The Weirdo was pensively tapping out a rhythm on the arm of the chair he was sitting in with one hand. He was singing the words to a song that had just come to him at the moment he began to tap out the rhythm of the song. It was completely random the way this song came to him and should only be looked on as a detail of the true and accurate account of events as they happened.
“There is a park that is known for the face it attracts, colorful people whose hair on one side is swept back.”
The phone in The Weirdo’s pocket rang and the phone vibrated at the same time. It wasn’t a particular ring, or a song downloaded from the internet. There was no particularly large amount of thought that came with the ring tone. It was just one of the rings that had come on the phone, a descending scale that just went from the top down to the bottom of the scale. He had simply picked it because it was the least annoying thing on the phone. He pulled the phone from his pocket and held it to his ear pressing the send button that answered.
“Yeah?”

To say The Weirdo was sitting in his room was a bit of a misnomer, as it wasn’t exactly true. The house was mostly divided into a series of suites, rather than single rooms. Some of the suites had more rooms than others did; The Weirdo’s suite for instance had higher ceilings than the rest of the house. His was the highest room in the house, and held the top floor spot. The servants quarters had been taken out and the space given to making higher ceilings. A few rooms still remained but they were for storage of things that large houses had. Mrs. Pendleton had a small suite of rooms on the ground floor, which is where she had requested to be allowed to stay.
The Weirdo was sitting in his room though, a small dressing room that he had made into a makeshift study. A table, with a computer sitting on it was sitting against one wall, wires leading away from it to the wall. He was sitting in an armchair next to one of the large windows, looking out at the ocean. You couldn’t see the city from this room it was the wrong side of the house. He could see the sparkling ocean though, which was without any birds. He noticed for the first time in some time, he couldn’t see any sea birds.
Sea birds are a regular fixture anywhere near New York City. A part from the fact that sea birds stick near the shore, there is a huge amount of food for a clever bird. He didn’t see any birds out there today though. While odd though, this wasn’t a great mystery to be delved into now. It was simply another fact to be stored back and collated as he went along. It did poke at him though, but he pushed it back for other thoughts.

Tommy was able to sit up on the hospital bed, although he looked to be in some discomfort. His hands and upper arms were bandaged and although he had taken pains, the back of his neck had a large bandage taped across it. There was the yellow amber stain of antibiotic soaking through the white cloth of the gauze that they had wrapped around him. His face was uncut though, and for that they were glad.
Jack entered the room first, followed by The Weirdo and Max came after them. Tommy watched them through the haze of the morphine they were feeding him through a drip. It was only because of this drip that he was able to sit on his rump at all.
“Hi.” Tommy said. “You’ve come to take me home?”
“We have indeed.” The Weirdo said.

Chapter One
A Ruined Lunch

The world can be said to be a watched place. We are all observers of our fellow beings and are also the observed. Some of us are active observers, some passive. There are times when we must go from being one to being the other. Most often we begin as a passive observer and then involve ourselves, becoming active. At that point, we become part of the story.
A small child dressed in a pink raincoat watched the world, and two men in particular. She had been doing a lot of watching lately. She was passively observing. She had been very careful about not being seen, taking great care not to be noticed by anyone. She had been spying for some time on a group of people for reasons of her own. What reasons a small child of about four could have to observe this group can be anyone’s guess. She wasn’t the only one watching of course, there were people watching the people who were watching other people.

It wasn't JUST anything.
The further along I get in this losing weight and getting healthy thing, the more I want to curb stomp anyone who says "Just eat less and exercise more." or "Just do more cardio." Or "Just..." anything. You get that a lot on the internet, lots of self-satisfied fit people who have never known actual fatness, or depression, or glandular dysfunctions, or any number of things. They’ll give you a lot of “Just” answers, like that’s all you need.
Just exercise more, never a word on how to start, or what you should do at your skill level. Just exercise. That, as advice, is useless, since it addresses nothing and often leaves a person feeling even more defeated than before. I get it, you’re a busy person and you don’t have time to step by step someone, but if you just parrot off the same bullshit again then you might as well have just kept your mouth shut.
Besides, there is no such thing as “Just” in this world. As I’ve said a few times, I have made a lot of progress in the last few years. This was not “Just” anything. There was no “Just” to a single thing I've done. Every single step, every single motion, has been a struggle.
Saying “Just eat less” makes it sound like making a radical change in my diet was something I tossed off in an afternoon. Like I just sat down and said “Right, no more cases of Coca Cola for me.” and then I just never drank any after that. What I’m about to say is going to shock and dismay many of you, but it wasn’t quite that easy. Took a lot of forward and backward motions, a lot of struggle.
Likewise, “Just exercise more” make me want to come at you with a blade. Again, we need a list of follow-up questions for that. How does one get over the crushing depression? I mean, you’re supposed to exercise to get over depression, but you can’t exercise because you’re too depressed... so they tell you to “just” exercise... and you know that results in the question how can you not see how dead these fish are? And there are more questions. What’s a good beginner level? Where do you go where fit people won’t harass and bully someone not as fit as them? How do I not get discouraged and give up? And more besides.
There is no just, just is a myth. This was a lot of work and the work feels unending.
Stop this “Just” nonsense.
Just stop it! See? Sounds stupid, right?
