Five things (Current Events Have Presented a Need for These Statments Edition)

1. Until yesterday, it never occurred to me just to what extent snow storms play merry hell with autofocus. Seriously, I was trying to get a picture and all I was getting was the whir of the motor as the lens tried to fix on every falling flake.

2. 8/5ths of the time, when this blog goes silent and merely presents photographs, it's not because I've got nothing to say, but rather I've got no energy to say it.

3. I seem to have lost my ammo pack with my SD and business cards in it at the zoo. I know this, because someone at the zoo e-mailed me to let me know he'd found it and would hold it for me. I'll have to go back there tomorrow. I had a feeling that might happen with my new map bag, because the little pocket has no secure buttons for it.

4. In related news, I need new cards, a card case, half a pack of cigarettes and sunglasses that I can wear when it gets dark.

5. Going to have to make marshmallows next week, and take photos of the process for a new project that I'll discuss later.

Five things (Posts I Want To Write Edition)

1. How English class nearly snuffed out my desire to read anything, ever.

2. How a drunk, two college teachers and abridged audiobooks brought me back to reading.

3. My personal history of blade ownership, from knives to swords and beyond.

4. A how-to on making the best chili ever.

5. What I expect people to bring to a relationship besides just themselves.

Five Things (Stuff I'll Never Do Edition)

1. I'm just never gonna grow a Freddie Mercury Mustache

2. I'll never eat a dodo egg omelet.

3. I'll never go to bed with Marilyn Monroe.

4. I'll never ride a J X-7 Star Cruiser through the Horse Head Nebula (but who would, those things are death traps)

5. I'll never guest star on an episode of the original Star Trek.

5 things (Marshmallow Edition)

1. Made some Rice Crispy Treats yesterday from my own marshmallows. They are better than yours, because of the home made marshmallowness.

2. Going to buy some agar and see how vegan marshmallows turn out. I want to make sure that vegans can have marshmallows too. The Internet claims that agar can be swapped for powdered gelatine on a one-to-one ratio. The only thing that gets me is WOW(!) agar is waaaay more expensive than gelatin. Not going to buy it today, that's for damn sure.

3. You can use pomegranate juice instead of water when you make marshmallows. I assume cranberry, grape, apple, and prune juice would also work.

4. If you boil too much liquid off your syrup, you can add some back during the mixing process, but this is dangerous as you'd need to know exactly what the mixture should look like while mixing or you could over do it. I actually under did it, so that batch was still kind of stiff, but as Syd is just going to put them in hot cocoa, it doesn't really matter. You can't add sugar if you didn't boil enough, you get gritty mallows. Perhaps if I try with powdered next time...

5. It still feels like I've performed a magic trick every time I pull one of these marshmallow out and munch one. I did this, I made this thing, I can produce candy! I can add pomegranate juice to the mix and feel like some sort of culinary god, because no one I know can even conceive of the idea of making a marshmallow in their own kitchen. At least know one I know IRL, some of you internet people probably know about it.

5 things (haven't done this in a while edition)

1. Tycho Brahe was sort of a dick, but he had a metal nose so I give him a pass.

2. You know what I’m going to miss in the future? Gay singers with strangely androgynous lyrics. Without the need for the closet, there will be less people sort of, kind of, staying in it, but not really.

3. When I get around to writing my “Kiss Me Now” list of great lines, the phrase I don’t like sand, it’s coarse and hard, not like you will NOT be on the list. The sad thing is, that line probably sounded awesome in George Lucas’s head. It would be been really something, but it isn’t.

4. I have never motorboated a woman’s breasts, nor have I wanted to. I find the idea, and the fascination it holds in some men’s minds, sort of disturbing.

5. You know what the orange juice needs? Bourbon and Rose’s Lime! You know what I don’t have in the house? Bourbon and Rose’s Lime! I’ve got gin, but no soda or vermouth. I’ve got scotch, but there are only certain situations under which I am prepared to drink scotch and this ain’t one of them. I’ve got some weird ass liquor made from hazelnuts, but quite frankly I’m not that desperate. Besides, I’ve carefully stage-managed things to avoid having any of the proper ingredients near each other, lest drinking alone ensue. After all, this ain’t December!

And no, you can’t swap bourbon for scotch because we aren’t barbarians here! Also, still don’t have any Rose’s Lime. See how carefully I’ve planned this?

5 Things (Secret Confession Edition)

#1. I have never owned a pair of pinking shears, and I never want to.

#2. I like exactly two musicals. The Muppet Movies don't count because you could take those sogns away and not hurt the narrative of the story.

#3. I am entranced with historical figures like Charles VI of France. I like him because he was so crazy that he thought he was made of glass. I read a historical account once that Chuckie there kept a glass maker around for a while so that if his head borke the glassier could repair it or make another one. I like my royals crazy.

#4. There was a time when I would shamelessly eat Cracker Jack. These days, I don't like it so much. Besides, the prize has sucked for years.

#5. I've been known to feed strays. Both the animal and the human kinds.

Five Things

1. I really like the Hieronymus Bosch painting The Conjurer, becuase the dog in it is wearing motley. No one dresses dogs up in motley anymore.

2. The word Circus, comes from the word circle. First attested in English 14th century, the word circus derives form Latin "circus", which is the romanization of the Greek "κίρκος" (kirkos), itself the anagram of the Homeric Greek "κρίκος" (krikos), meaning "circle" or "ring". So now you know.

3. Lillian Gish was a hottie

4. I very much want to see a version of Hamlet where Hammy and Fortinbras solve crimes and foil a bank robbery with a 10 minute shoot out and Ophlia decides to lez it up with whoever else is on stage in a skirt. You know... for kids!

5. I'm not all that wild about Vincent van Gogh's work. More into Mark Rothko, even though that poor bastard was ripped off left and right.

Five Things (Writing Projects edition)

I have five stories in the works right now, in that they're in my head. I'm thinking about which ones to proceed with.

1. New Jack Collier story. I've got an epic and a drawing room Agatha Christie style story in mind. These are two stories, but they're the same character.

2. Weirdo vs. The Flying Saucers. The sixth book in the grand epic I've been talking about in veiled terms since starting this thing. Spoiler: they fight against flying saucer bound bad guys.

3. A children's story. I was thinking of writing a story about a squirrel (possibly named Cyril) that didn't have enough nuts for the winter because the chipmunks stole them. So he goes on a bloody streak of vengeance, killing each of the chipmunks and stealing back what's his. This will involve garroting, stabbing, shooting and beating to death with a little novelty baseball bat (Because chipmunks and squirrels are small, see) The only thing that was going to keep him from going over the edge was the rabbit who lived at the bottom of his tree and tries to bring him back into the light. Sort of Baby's First Noir. As an added bonus, the moral lesson is going to be "Sometimes life is hard and murder makes it all better." Because I like getting angry letters from parent groups.

4. A horror story where a war vet is thought to be paranoid because he thinks the fey folk are stalking him. The only thing that keeps them back is steel, so he collects a lot of knives. I was thinking of having his wife tell the story first person. She can slowly buy into his delusions or find out it's all true.

5. Devil Inc. Which I've talked about before.

Five Things I'm Fascinated By

When was the last time I did a five things list? Last month it seems. Well, let's do another one okay? Let's do this one!

1. Unexplained oddities. I like a mystery, and I like things to be odd. I could have picked a lot of things, but I went with this one Cracked article.

2. Language of the Fan. Yes, I know it was a marketing idea, yes I know it's way more recent than most people know, yes I know it's silly. I don't care. I really love the idea of women using fans to secretly chit-chat.

3. Retrofuturism. There are few things I love so much as having a look back and seeing what people thought the world was going to be like. I prefer serious attempts at futurism rather than those made for entertainment. Star Trek is neat and all, but I really dig seeing how scientist who knew what they were talking about thought we'd live.

4. Women. What? I happen to find the thoughts and ideas of women to be fascinating. And, yes, on a purely aesthetic level, I also think the female form is interesting and beautiful to look at. Yes, okay fine, I like women on a sexual level as well. Nothing to be ashamed of, I'm a healthy young lad and it does factor as number three behind brains and just looking. Odd as it may sound, I really do like most of you for your minds.

5. Marketing failures. Let's just go down a list of some of my favorites... OK Soda, Crystal Pepsi, New Coke, Arch Deluxe and of course, Premier cigarettes. Yes, that last one isn't really a marketing failure because Premiers never really made it to the market, but it goes so well with the rest of the list.

4. The ‘Ningen’ FREAKY!

5. Hark! A Vagrant A good comic, read it!!!

Five things, Still in the Wilderness Edition

1. I feel bad that so much time has gone by since a 5 thing entry, since a proper poll, since I talked about waffles and since I shouted Shwanekee. However, since I know about these things, maybe I can do something about them.

2. I know Young Einstein is a dumb movie. I know it's just montages and music videos with a little bit of plot scattered between them. I still like it though.

3. I am not back to my full creative capacity, but I think I know which direction to travel in. I'll get there.

4. I'm not sure, but our wowway.com email addresses may get shut off, or bumped for a few days. We're trying to look into that. You can still get me at my gmail account though.

5. Ookla the Mok was right when they said "Everything's so complicated"

Five Things for November 10th

1. Reading In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash is going slower that I would like, but the stories are good.

2. Been watching Doki Doki School Hours, which I like, but falls apart a bit in the OVA. The cartoon is silly and seriously light on plot, but I like it. In a shocking breach of protocol, the voice acting on the dub actually isn't bad. In a proper anime, one that follows all the rules, the dub's voice acting should be so horrifically annoying that you want to jam a steak knife in your ear. This one isn't too bad though. Normally I wouldn’t bother with dubs, but I sort of wanted to do something while watching the cartoon and it was easier this way.

3. Syd is trying very hard not to get sick right now. She’s being a brave little soldier, but I’m worried it’s going to catch up with her anyway. It’s creeping up on me too, I’m afraid. We need to buy some orange juice or something. Problematic since we’re low on funds until payday.

4. Right now, I would be willing to burn down the house and fake my own death to avoid having to do anything even remotely connected to any holiday.

5. These last few months have sucked. Seriously sucked in so many ways. Personal shit that I'm not going into here have caused problems and tension. A lot of “I’m disagreeing with her but I’m going to argue with you” coming from both sides. Got it mostly worked out, sort of. It seems to be okay, but everyone is still tense. That is enough to make most people depressed, but let’s combine that with my family’s inability to stay alive because of FUCKING INSURANCE COMPANIES! Oooh, I do hope that socialist white-folk hating Kenyan destroys your fucking industry and you suffer just one tenth of what you’ve done to others. Put that up with the physical symptoms of the arthritis in my poor mitts is really, really bad. My left thumb can hardly have any pressure on it today, for example. It keeps moving around, today the thumb, tomorrow the elbow, yesterday it was one of my knees. Never boring. Then you’ve got the muscle thing. If you can imagine microscopic rats gnawing at the fibers of your muscles, you can get to the feelings I’m having in my legs and arms. Enough right? No! One thing after another has gone wrong, broken, misfired, or just plain failed in a way that just writing FAIL in big block letters can't convey. As a result of these things, many of which would be small and manageable on their own but not all coming at once, I have not been feeling at my best. I can’t even get angry at the whole thing, I’m just too tired. I am completely worn out and only have an inch or two of rope left.

If I do manage to get energetic for long enough to sustain an unhealthy anger, I think I’ll go to the headquarters of every pantheon I can find and inform them that I am not pleased by the current distribution of bullshit.

5 things (I was out today edition)

1. I am currently behind schedule on all but one project that I'm working on. As a side note, the only reason the other project isn't behind schedule is that the schedule hasn't actually been written yet. I assume that as soon as I have a schedule for that project, I'll promptly get behind on it.

2. I'm not sure whether I should be pleased or disturbed to find that Nyotaimori is a real practice and not just something dreamed up by hentai pervs.

3. I've only just noticed there isn't much Dinosaur stuff in our house. What's up with that? I need to get some dinosaur fossil replicas for this joint or something. Maybe get something from the Carnegie collection to spruce the place up a bit. Something from Gaston Design maybe? Birthday is right around the corner, got to start thinking about these things. SRSLY!

4. As of now, all distractions must come in an attractive female form. If I get any other kind, I will either ignore it or smash it with a hammer.

5. This might just be the best advertisement in existence. All of it, the whole thing. There is no part of this ad that doesn't tickle me in one way or another. The batshittery at the end alone justified this thing. I don't care what they're selling, and I can’t say I rightly know, but I'll buy a box of it.

A few points

1) Seriously? The Metric System? Republicans now think using the metric system is dumb? Odd, I seem to remember the military uses the metric system. Why do republicans hate the military? Why do they think the army is stupid? Why oh why do Republicans hate America? I would also like to point out that it was Nixon who signed the 55 mph speed limit into law.
A better way to phrase the whole thing is come back in 2012 and ask why things aren't better if there were no republicans standing in the way of the Dems. They won't be better, there will always be something wrong, and there will probably be things that even lefty-pinko-liberal-faggit-liberal-pinko-lefties will be unhappy about.

2) Because of Michael Jackson, I bought a bunch of fruit snacks. Michael died, you could die at any time. My mother would never buy us fruit roll-ups, but I'm an adult now and if I want gushers and fruit roll-ups and little fruit snacks in the shape of Optiumus Prime, I can buy them. So I bought ten boxes because they were on sale. For Michael, which Holly claims is the best tribute she's heard all week. Strangely it's the Kroger Brand Peanut themed fruit snacks that look the most like what their supposed to be. No guessing, they're very clear.

3) Talking about Michael Jackson got me talking about Holly's so-called taste in music (she thinks Huey Lewis is both tolerable and an example of Rock Music*) and that got me talking about Billy Joel, and how I remember a lot of yuppie scumbags listening to Billy like they had the slightest idea what he was talking about. Which led me to singing a song called "Bloomfield Town" about an ad executive who was let go recently. You might work out what song it's based on.
Well we're like totally living in Bloomfield Town
But the Lexuses are gone from the ground
And I had to let the gardener go todaaaay
And we're living here in Bloomfield town.

If you don't live in Michigan I should point out Bloomfield Hills is a fairly rich section in our area.

4) I've still got a post in my work pile about how Michael Jackson has lead me to buying a bunch of Prince things, but I haven't finished it yet. This has been happening a lot lately. I've got about 10 things in my work pile that are either not done or never will be. Lots of posts I'm not making. That leads to point five...

5) It is quite possible I'm loosing my marbles. I've been forgetting a lot of little things lately. It's not new. I've always been forgetful. This slide is a gradual thing I can track too. I've watched my mother do it for twenty years and I watched my grandmother do it for longer than that. It never got to "Are you June's boy?" levels, although concentration has become a bitch and a half the last year or so. Living through this, and admitting it openly, I have to say it's not scary. I've always seen it as this thing we're supposed to be terrified of on TV and in movies. "Oh dear, I walk into a room and forget why I came, I'M SO SCARED!" Well, I'm not scared, I'm annoyed. I get up, go to a room and can't remember what I came in for and I sit there swearing. "What the fuck did I come in here for?" I'm more annoyed about the wasted time than I am scared about not knowing who people are in later years. While I could blame genetics, I prefer to blame drugs and the so-called doctors that gave them to me.

*She had a bad childhood and never saw Raiders of The Lost Ark until she was in her late twenties. I forgive her, and I try to show her the way, but it's a constant uphill struggle because she thinks someone singing Margaritaville isn't a reason to get the tar and feathers.

5 Things that aren't really connected.

5 Things that aren't really connected. 1. I have all my computer things now. Hard drive, bag, computer, thumb drive*, and DVD drive are all here. Everything works okay. The mouse that came with my bag is the smallest and cutest one I've ever seen. Everything is red, it's little, it's adorable. I’ve still got to look up a few things, set up a few things, but really we’re good.
*It was included, I didn't actually want it. The included movie took up half the drive and it wasn't even widescreen. My computer has a 16x9 screen!

2. Mark Sanford thinks he’s King David now. The insanity just never ends.

3. I am less affected by current celebrity deaths than I was by the death of my grandmother last year. I was barely affected by the death of my grandmother because I'd made my peace with it long before it happened.

4. I think if you're a Michael Jackson fan you should walk away from the news and not look back for the next week. There's going to be speculation about his death, with tabloid types deciding to say it was drugs whether it was or not, and then we'll have the fight over his estate. It's going to be ugly, really ugly. I'm already avoiding any news stories about it because I don't want to see that.

5. I got Josie Long's DVD Trying is Good, which is a really good bit of stand up. I've come to the conclusion that the reason I like comedians like Josie and Eddie Izzard isn't just that they're quirky and eccentric. Being quirky and eccentric helps of course, but there is more to it than that. I like them because they actually LIKE things. If you can, get some of their stuff (Ask me nice and I'll get you some audio) and you'll find that instead of being angry about things or hating things, it's all about the stuff they love. I like the idea of someone being FOR something. It also occurs to me that being positive on things and still being funny means you have to work harder to get to the joke. Also, Josie is cute as hell. The DVD is region 0 so anyone can play it anywhere in the world, there is a second program and a commentary on the disc and it's only £9, which comes to about $20US.

Haven't done a Five Things post in a while

1. I am currently staving off (if staving is the word I want) a massive headache by taking hourly hits of Excedrin by the handful. It's helping a little, but not enough. It also brings its own special new problems with it.

2. Yatzee of Zero Punctuation fame has reviewed Duke Nukem Forever, and it's possibly the best review for any game you'll ever see.

3. I have been about three seconds away from a full blown screaming fit for the last week or so. I blame the weather and George Lucas. Because all of us Star Wars fans blame George Lucas for everything.

4. There is a turtle wandering around in the front lawn. Not the back, where the pond is, but the front. I have no idea what he (or she) is doing there, but pictures will come as soon as I upload them.

5. I think it's time for a Seven Samurai sequel/prequel. That's not an and/or there by the way. I want a Seven Samurai sequel and prequel all rolled into one. And if you could find a way for Kikuchiyo to have survived (OMG! SPOILER!) and get a smart talking teen side kick, that would be AWESOME!

5 Dangers

1. The danger with shouting out "Does anyone understand how I feel?" into the night* is that you just might get someone come up to you and say "Yes."

2. The danger with extending your hand to offer help is that the other person just might accept.

3. The danger if asking for help is that someone might give it to you.

4. The danger with offering to listen is that someone might tell you.

5. The danger in saying things are dangerous, is that some people won’t understand why they are so dangerous.

*Or internet
